Heat and wind have prompted officials to post a high-danger fire alert throughout most of southern Colorado.

Denver will bask under sunny skies today and the high temperature should climb to about 92 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Winds in Denver could gust up to 28 mph.

Hot weather, low humidity, winds and dry ground conditions will combine today to boost fire dangers across a wide area of Colorado south of the Interstate 70 corridor including South Park, the southern Front Range foothills, Palmer Divide and the eastern plains, the weather service said. The red flag fire warning for the area will start at noon and expire at 8 p.m.

A fast moving storm front out of the Pacific Northwest should hit the state tonight bringing cooler weather and a chance for showers, but winds will likely remain gusty.

Mostly cloudy skies over Denver on Wednesday will bring a 20 percent chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms, the weather service reports, as the city’s high temperature tops out at about 70 degrees.
