A coalition determined to change the face of faith in the public square is meeting tonight in Denver.

We Believe Colorado calls itself a diverse group of faith leaders seeking to shape the values debate for 2008, challenging turf held by social conservatives and the religious right in the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Organizers called it “a historic evening of worship” and “training for effective advocacy on moral issues” such as civil rights, immigration, the environment and economic justice.

The values debate in recent elections focused on abortion, embryonic stem cell research, gay marriage and other so-called wedge issues.

Tonight’s racially and ethnically diverse gathering will advance a values agenda that is inclusive and focused on a broad range of issues, said spokesman Dan Nejfelt with D.C.-based Faith in Public Life.

Faith in Public Life advocates for “a country in which diverse religious voices for justice and the common good consistently impact public policy; and those who use religion as a tool of division and exclusion do not dominate public discourse.”

More than 100 religious activists from Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other congregations have signed up to attend the evening event at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church.
