GOLDEN, Colo.—A man who pleaded guilty to shooting the family dog over a stolen morsel of food has been sentenced to 45 days in jail.
Thirty-six-year-old Devin Shane Calhoun was also ordered to three years probation, 12 animal abuse treatment sessions, and 36 weeks of domestic violence classes. The Jefferson County district attorney’s office said Calhoun was also ordered to comply with mental health treatment, including therapy and medication, and to find and keep a job.
Calhoun pleaded guilty Jan. 14 to misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals and prohibited use of a weapon. The dog, Lucky, survived the Aug. 12 shooting in Conifer.
Prosecutors said alcohol was involved.
