DENVER—U.S. 40 in Grand County is back open following the clean up of a gas tanker spill.

A stretch of the highway near Hot Sulphur Springs had been shut down since just before midnight.

The Colorado State Patrol said investigators don’t believe any of the 5,000 gallons of fuel that spilled ended up in the Colorado River. Department of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said there’s no indication fish or other wildlife were affected by the spill.

The patrol said the tanker driver lost control on a left hand curve, went off the road and hit a guardrail. The truck continued off the road and rolled onto its top, spilling most of its load.

The truck driver, 44-year-old Kevin L. Spriggs of Denver, was airlifted to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver with injuries that didn’t appear to be life threatening.
