The Colorado Transportation Commission approved a measure Thursday that should allow a $31 million improvement of the road from the north side of Guanella Pass to Georgetown to proceed. Most money in the construction contract comes from federal Forest Highway funds. But the project was short about $2.5 million and needed temporary transportation commission funding to make up most of the shortfall. Clear Creek County is contributing $300,000. The state’s contribution, about $2.2 million, will be repaid by the federal government at a later date. The project will grade the roadway, improve drainage, add retaining walls and guardrails, protect against rockfalls, and pave the route. It covers about 5.5 miles of Guanella Pass Road.
