PUEBLO, Colo.—Pueblo police say an explosives expert who trains law-enforcement officers faces criminal charges after investigators found explosives in his home.

Investigators arrested 54-year-old James Burton Crippin Wednesday after an 18-month investigation. They did not disclose what materials they found in his home.

Crippin has been released on $35,000 bail. He declined to comment Thursday.

Police say Crippin is a former forensics investigator for the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. He trained about 700 law enforcement officers at the Western Forensic Law Enforcement Training Center at the Colorado State University in Pueblo.

College spokeswoman Cora Zaletel says he left in June “to pursue other opportunities.”
