“The Beer Drinker’s Guide to Munich” ($16.95, Freizeit Publishers) is fairly self-explanatory. This is a guide to where to drink beer in one of the most popular beer-drinking cities in the world. Find beer gardens that seat 8,000 and smaller brewpubs, as well as the nightclub-style spots for the younger crowd looking to dance or hear live music, complete with beer-mug ratings from author Larry Hawthorne, who uses a one- to five-mug system. But if places didn’t merit at least 2 1/2 mugs, it didn’t make it into the book. The guide also includes six coupons in the back from its exclusive “five-beer-mug club” members, the beer halls that warranted the highest ratings, all of whom agreed to offer a buy one, get one free deal. Each entry features a detailed description of the place, as well as a nicely detailed map, a photo, how to pronounce the name, info on brews, hours and websites. And this is the sixth edition, so Hawthorne knows how to keep it updated.
