Three Colorado boxers earned berths in championship bouts after winning semifinals Thursday in the Junior Olympic Boxing National Championships at the Superior Dome in Marquette, Mich.

At 165 pounds, Izaak Cardona of Colorado Springs won a tiebreaking decision over Florida’s Daquan Arnett by a 16-15 total punch-count lead. Cardona will face Ohio’s Donald Anderson today.

At 119, Ricky Rodriguez of Evans won 19-10 over St. Louis’ Brandon Davis and will face California’s Jose Ramirez.

Greeley’s Cassandra Mendoza, a defending champion, won a women’s 106-pound semifinal over Texas’ Vanessa Espinoza, 23-13. Mendoza will fight Jessica Barron.

And at 154 pounds, Wheat Ridge’s John Zabala was eliminated 13-10 by Missouri’s Corey Walker.

CC hires defensive coordinator.

The Colorado College football team hired former Princeton and New Mexico Highlands coach Isaac Carter as defensive coordinator, head coach Bob Bodor said.

“Coach Carter brings a terrific background at the high school, Division II and Ivy League levels to the CC football program,” Bodor said.

Buena Vista’s Finley honored.

Mason Finley of Buena Vista High School was named the Gatorade Colorado boys track and field athlete of the year. Finley, a junior, won Class 3A shot put and discus titles at the Class 3A state meet and earned Denver Post All-Colorado honors as the track athlete of the year.
