Double Dutch, the popular jump-roping pastime, soon could become a varsity sport in New York City public schools. The Public School Athletic League is considering adding the event to school teams as early as next spring. The activity involves jumpers hopping between two ropes twirled like eggbeaters by turners. Players earn points based on speed and innovative moves. Ruth Payne, coach of the Jammin’ Jumpers in Brooklyn, came up with the idea as a way to attract more girls to athletics.
