An occupant of a home near Manitou Springs where two children were killed and a man was fatally shot by deputies Sunday was being investigated for domestic violence.

The children’s mother had called the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Sunday afternoon concerned about her children’s welfare.

When deputies arrived at the home, at 6240 Waterfall Loop, they “observed two children through a window with obvious severe injuries,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities still have not released the identity of the man who was killed Sunday, but according to computer records Scott Montgomery, 37, lived at the home.

Domestic-violence charges were filed against Montgomery in May, and he had pleaded not guilty in the case. Domestic-violence charges also were filed against Montgomery in November, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records, but those charges were dismissed.

On Sunday, deputies forced their way into the home and called for medical assistance for the children, ages 2 and 5. Inside the home the deputies were “confronted by an armed suspect” and “shots were fired,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

The armed man died at the scene. Both children also died, but the cause has not been made public.

The mother had called for help because “she was concerned about some of the statements the (father) had made about the children,” said Lt. Lari Sevene of the Sheriff’s Office.

The two deputies involved are on routine administrative leave. The El Paso County district attorney’s office will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
