Re: “Cherry, apple, rhubarb her pies take the cake,” July 11
Could you please find out what kind of shortening she uses for her crust? Lard? Crisco?
P.S. When I was a girl in 4-H in Iowa, we had lard-baking contests! And, I am still alive — as is my 87-year-old mother.

What size can of cherries? And are the cherries drained?

Tony uses Crisco in her crusts. If you’re concerned about trans fat, Crisco now makes a trans fat-free version, or you can use Spectrum or Earth Balance natural shortenings. Tony uses a 14.5-ounce can of pitted, red sour (or pie) cherries, drained. It yields about 2 cups of fruit.
