A Longmont man drowned in the Roaring Fork River this afternoon after jumping in for a swim.
The man, who has not yet been identified, jumped in an area of the river known as the Punch Bowl and was pulled under by a whirlpool, witnesses told Pitkin County Sheriff’s deputies.
The saw him surface gasping for air, and tried for eight minutes to free him from the undertow before getting him out, according the Sheriff’s Department.
He died en route to Aspen Valley Hospital.
