KUSA Channel 9 photojournalist Corky Scholl today won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) for videography.

RTNDA announced that Scholl is to be honored for a compilation of stories. Scholl joined KUSA in 2003. In 2005, he became the fifth KUSA staffer to be named NPPA Photographer of the Year.

This award furthers KUSA’s national reputation for emphasizing superior photojournalism. The awards will be presented at an awards dinner on October 13 in New York.

Scholl said what he looks for in his work are “moments”–moments that telegraph large emotions.

“Just real life happening,” he said. “People either laughing or crying, real emotion that’s going on out there, which is hard to do with a video camera because you’re so noticeable. I guess you try to hide, try to make yourself invisible. Maybe that’s my advantage, I’m pretty small.”

Scholl hopes to pick up his award in person in New York.

RTNDA said 54 news organizations will be honored with 77 awards out of an initial pool of 3,459 entries from several hundred news organizations.
