After the bullpen’s worst performance of the season Monday, the Rockies optioned out Ryan Speier and called up left-hander Cedrick Bowers.
Speier faced two batters last night and didn’t retire either one. He was part of a bullpen meltdown that saw the relievers allow nine runs on eleven hits.
Bowers received praise recently from general manager Dan O’Dowd for his Triple-A performance. Bowers impressed teammates in Colorado Springs with his velocity and command. He went 4 1.3 innings with 2.97 ERA in 16 games this season.
“We want to recreate the bullpen to some degree, and I think adding another lefty will help us,” said manager Clint Hurdle whose team has lost eight straight games.
