The Avalanche re-signed forward Wojtek Wolski today to a two-year, $5.6 million contract.

Wolski, 22, scored 18 goals and 48 points in 77 games this past season, a slight drop from the 50 points in 76 games the year before.

Wolski will make $2.5 million in 2008-09 and $3.1 million the following season.

“Wojtek is definitely part of the elite young group of players establishing themselves in the league. Therefore, we feel very strongly that he is important to the future success of our club,” Avs general manager Francois Giguere said. “We’ve been pleased with his development at the NHL level and we expect him to be a big contributor to our team.”

If Joe Sakic retires, Wolski is expected to convert from a wing to center. And, he might play center full-time even if Sakic stays.

That was the position he played in junior hockey, and which might best complement his finesse-style of game.
