GREELEY, Colo.—A teenager was sentenced to 18 years in prison for her role in the death of her half-sister, who police say was beaten during a re-enactment of the “Mortal Kombat” video game.
Heather Trujillo pleaded guilty in May to child abuse-negligently causing the death of 7-year-old Zoe Garcia. Trujillo’s prison sentence may be suspended if she successfully completes six years in a Youthful Offender System program.
Trujillo and 17-year-old Lamar Roberts were baby-sitting Zoe last December. Authorities say she died from head injuries after she was hit, kicked and slammed to the floor as the teens reportedly re-enacted the video game.
The 17-year-old Trujillo has agreed to testify against Roberts, who is charged with child abuse causing death. Roberts’ preliminary hearing is July 10.
