OMAHA — Nebraska Beef is expanding a recall announced earlier this week to include 5.3 million pounds of meat it produced for ground beef between May 16 and June 26.

Federal investigators have linked Nebraska Beef’s products to an outbreak of E. coli-related illnesses affecting 40 people in Michigan and Ohio.

Some Nebraska Beef products were sold by grocer Kroger, which has recalled ground-beef products in more than 20 states, including Colorado.

A spokesman for Kroger subsidiaries King Soopers and City Market stores on Thursday said the expanded recall does not affect them, although the company had removed some product from meat cases and freezers.

Customers who purchased Angus ground beef from full-service counters at King Soopers and City Market stores with “use by” dates from May 31 to July 3 — as well as prepackaged 1-pound Private Selection 91 percent organic ground beef from the self-service case with the same dates — are asked to return the product to the store for a refund or replacement.

No illnesses have been reported in Colorado, state health officials said. Post staff and news services
