The Nuggets are set to offer free-agent guard Anthony Carter a one-year contract worth roughly $1.2 million for next season, a source said.
But Denver’s starting point guard last season might “wait and see” about signing, the source said Sunday night, to see if Carter can get a multiyear deal from another team. The NBA’s free-agent signing period begins Wednesday.
Last season was Carter’s finest. Playing at age 32, the 6-foot-2 Carter averaged 28.0 minutes, 7.8 points and 5.5 assists per game, all career highs. Carter benefited greatly in Denver’s fast-paced offense and by playing with explosive scorers Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony. Carter, however, struggled during the Nuggets’ playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers, losing his starting job.
In their current backcourt, the Nuggets have Iverson under contract as well as guard Chucky Atkins, a 3-point threat who battled injuries during his first season with the team. Also in the backcourt is guard Taurean Green, who as a rookie last season played little after two NCAA championship seasons with Florida. The Nuggets will watch him closely during summer league play, which begins this week in Las Vegas.
