Stock-car legend Richard Petty on Saturday will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first NASCAR start, when he debuted at Columbia (S.C.) Speedway in 1958. His first race, in the Convertible Division, netted him a sixth-place finish. He went on to tally a record 200 victories, seven series championships and seven Daytona 500 wins. “I just think I was a lucky son of a gun to be born at the right place at the right time under the right circumstances with a little bit of talent and a lot of talented people around me to put me in a position to be where I’m at today,” Petty said this week.
