COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Colorado Springs police say an internal audit showed two motorcycle unit officers falsely claimed to have written more traffic tickets than they did, apparently so they would look more productive.
Police said Tuesday that the activity began around the first of the year, and both officers are now retired.
Any tickets actually issued by the officers were found to be valid and legal.
Police say they have 676 sworn officers, and no one else is believed to be involved.
Prosecutors determined the officers’ actions were not illegal. However the police department decided to disclose the officers’ actions publicly anyway.
The officers’ names were not released.
