ARAPAHOE COUNTY — Advertisements about amazing deals on rentals and home sales are coaxing renters and buyers into sending money to the offshore accounts of fraud artists.
Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said her office has recently received numerous complaints about a new real estate scam that preys on a buyer’s hope of finding a great deal.
The “thief” copies rental and home-sales advertisements, drops the cost of the home or apartment, substitutes the phone number, and then posts it on or another Internet site, Chambers said.
When buyers call the forger, they are told to send the money to an overseas account — often because the seller claims to be on a church mission to Africa, she said.
