Scott Podsednik didn’t check the lineup when he walked into the Rockies’ clubhouse Wednesday. His last start was June 27. He had only two at-bats since, so why torture himself? But Podsednik got the nod in center field and delivered a strong performance. He punched out two hits, including an RBI single. He was also thrown out twice by catcher Jason Kendall while trying to steal second base.
For starters.
With other candidates eliminating themselves based on their work schedule this weekend, the Brewers’ Ben Sheets is emerging as the likely starting pitcher for manager Clint Hurdle’s NL all-stars. Sheets had a season-high 11 strikeouts Wednesday.
Hit parade.
Garrett Atkins’ 112 hits are the most by any major-league third baseman this season. Seven of Atkins’ 14 home runs have come on the road.
