PHILADELPHIA — Cardinals left-hander Mark Mulder left his comeback start against the Phillies with more pain in his shoulder after throwing only 16 pitches and recording one out in the first inning Wednesday night.

The Cardinals said Mulder had left shoulder discomfort and will be evaluated today. He was making his first start since September.

The Rangers scratched all-star designated hitter Milton Bradley from the lineup because of soreness in his left knee. Texas also put pitcher Vicente Padilla on the 15-day disabled list with a stiff neck, retroactive to Saturday, and recalled right- hander Wes Littleton from Triple-A Oklahoma.

• Reds right-hander Aaron Harang will have an MRI exam on his right forearm.

• Astros second baseman Kazuo Matsui (hamstring) was activated, while pitcher Chad Reineke was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock (Texas).

• Nationals outfielder Elijah Dukes underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks.

• Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew was out of the lineup a day after “tweaking” his back.

• The White Sox placed closer Bobby Jenks on the 15-day DL and purchased right-hander D.J. Carrasco’s contract from Triple-A Charlotte (N.C.).

• The Blue Jays placed pitcher Dustin McGowan (shoulder) on the DL and recalled reliever Brian Wolfe from Triple-A Syracuse (N.Y.).

• Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton was scratched from the lineup because of a strained rib cage muscle.
