Aurora SWAT team members arrested a suspected robber and found evidence tying him to two recent burglaries, including a home-invasion robbery, authorities say.
Garry Martin, 42, was arrested at a home on the 3700 block of South Emporia Way in Aurora on Tuesday for a robbery he allegedly committed June 30 at a home in the 6500 block of South Arbutus Circle in Jefferson County, said Jacki Kelley, spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
On that day, thieves followed a man home from Southwest Plaza Mall and robbed him at gunpoint inside his home. The suspects duct-taped the victim’s hands and feet and “hog tied” his limbs together, Kelley said.
The masked suspects stole money and credit cards, and left in a 2008 black Cadillac, she said. The victim broke free and called police.
Shortly afterward, a woman reported seeing a man in a ski mask using an ATM machine at a nearby Wells Fargo Bank. He was using the victim’s credit cards, Kelley said.
A Denver police officer stopped the Cadillac, which had up to three people inside, but the car then sped off. The Denver officer called off a chase because of police policy.
During an investigation, detectives discovered that Martin had been involved in a crime spree on June 18 in Lakewood and Jefferson County, Kelley said.
Officials say Martin and another man stole the keys to a Toyota Tundra, a wallet and credit cards from a locker at Bally’s Fitness Center at Wadsworth Boulevard and Belleview Avenue.
The suspects took the car to the victim’s home, burglarized the house and used the credit cards to buy items at two stores, Kelley said.
Lakewood police spotted the stolen car and pursued it after the driver refused to stop. Both suspects fled on foot after the vehicle’s tire went flat.
The driver, Martin, was apprehended immediately, while the second suspect, Vincent Martin, 18, was tracked by a K-9 unit to a home in the 600 block of South Yarrow Street, where he was hiding in a window well.
Garry Martin’s second arrest came Tuesday as police were serving a search warrant linked to the June 30 home invasion. He is being held at the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bail, Kelley said.
Authorities are searching for at least one other suspect, who may be driving the Cadillac with fleet license plate number “351RBL.”
