A planned barbecue became a cottonball flash fire in Westminister tonight.

A man in the 9500 block of Pierce Street went out to turn on the heat in his gas grill and ignited “a lot” of fluffy cottonwood puffs that had accumulated on his deck, said Westminster Fire spokeswoman Diana Allen.

Burning the fluff like a fuse, the fire raced across the deck, scorched a hot tub, leapt a wood fence and scorched the outside of two homes.

No one was injured, Allen said. The fire was quickly doused and the damage was cosmetic, she said.
