PUEBLO, Colo.—No charges are expected against drivers involved in two separate deadly car-motorcycle crashes, after authorities learned the motorcycle riders were traveling at excessive speeds.
In Pueblo, police say 56-year-old Mary Lopez was making a left turn in her Hyundai Santa Fe on June 16 when she was struck by a Yamaha motorcycle.
Police Capt. Linda Grisham says traffic division experts have calculated that 21-year-old motorcyclist Brett Bond was traveling between 124 and 145 mph at the time of the crash. Police used video from a nearby security camera to calculate his speed.
Grisham says since speed was the cause of the crash, there was no evidence to charge Lopez.
Bond was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but died of his injuries.
On Thursday, the State Patrol said no charges will be filed in a car-motorcycle crash May 24 in Boulder County that killed Jacob Gonzales, 25.
Troopers said a reconstruction of the accident indicated Gonzales was riding a motorcycle that was going about 100 to 130 mph in a 30 mph zone when a Kia driven by Elizabeth Schrieber made a left turn into its path. Troopers said the motorcycle’s speed and a hill made it impossible for Schrieber to see Gonzales before she started turning.
