BOULDER, Colo.—Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to lay off 212 people in Broomfield and Louisville by the end of September, and more cuts may be coming as part of a previously announced downsizing, state and company officials said Thursday.

The cuts represent about 8 percent of Sun’s 2,593 employees in Louisville and Broomfield.

The computer systems maker announced two months ago it would cut 1,500 to 2,500 jobs. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company has about 34,400 employees worldwide.

In paperwork filed with state labor officials, Sun said it expected the Colorado layoffs to begin this month, but most were expected to occur Sept. 8.

Sun also said it had preliminary information that more cuts could come sometime between Dec. 23 and Jan. 5. Dana Lengkeek, a Sun spokeswoman, declined to say how many more people would be affected.

Sun Microsystems had about 4,700 employees in Colorado after it completed its acquisition of Storage Technology Corp. in 2005.
