Colorado senior-to-be Derek Tolan outlasted Colorado State’s Zen Brown in a Thursday quarterfinal and will face teammate Luke Symons today in the final match of the 108th CGA Match Play Championship at Plum Creek Golf and Country Club in Castle Rock.
Tolan, of South Suburban, earned a 3-and-2 victory over Brown, the defending champion from Indian Tree, in the morning quarterfinal round. Tolan then topped 2004 champ Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club 4 and 3 in a semifinal.
Symons topped Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club 2 and 1 in a quarterfinal, then beat CU’s Patrick Grady of Omni Interlocken 3 and 2 in a semifinal.
Tolan will return to the Match Play final for the first time since 2005, also the last year two CU players played for the championship. Then, it was Grady who topped Tolan for the title.
The 36-hole final match will tee off today at 7 a.m.
