BOSTON — David Ortiz, on the disabled list since May 31 because of a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist, is expected to return to Boston’s lineup on July 25 for the opener of a series against the New York Yankees.
“I feel good,” the Red Sox slugger said after hitting off a pitching machine Saturday. “I was acting like I normally do: locating, check swing, swing and a miss — stuff like that. Everything was fine.”
Ortiz is batting .252 with 13 homers and 43 RBIs in 54 games this season.
• The Red Sox placed shortstop Julio Lugo on the 15-day DL because of a severely strained left quadriceps muscle.
Wood battling blister.
Kerry Wood expects to sit out the All-Star Game on Tuesday because of a blister on his pitching hand.
“We have the opportunity to take six days to let it get better and not deal with it the rest of the year,” the Chicago Cubs’ closer said. “It’s a little bit disappointing.”
Reds’ Harang bound for DL.
The Reds are expected to place pitcher Aaron Harang on the 15-day DL today because of a strained right forearm.
Jenks close to returning.
White Sox closer Bobby Jenks got through a bullpen session without any problems and should be ready to pitch after the all-star break.
