The fourth red light camera installed in Denver is getting ready to go live at West 8th Avenue and Speer Boulevard.

The latest camera is the final installation in the city’s initial series, city officials said.

The cameras snap photographs of drivers who run red lights and a fine is mailed to the owner of the car based on photographs of the car’s license plates.

The latest camera, like others installed before it, will go through a grace period and warnings will be mailed out before fines kick in. All violations are reviewed by police before tickets are mailed.

State law caps tickets for violators caught by cameras at $75, and it doesn’t allow points against a driver’s license for those offenses.

Cameras have also been installed at East 6th Avenue and Lincoln Street, West 6th Avenue and Kalamath Street and East 36th Avenue and Quebec Street.

The intersection at 6th and Lincoln ranked No. 1 in Denver in crashes, with 195, from Jan. 1, 2002, through March 15, 2005, according to the city, including 96 broadside crashes.

The Denver City Council has approved an $838,000 contract with Redflex Traffic Systems to provide, install and perform monthly service on the equipment through 2012.
