CHEYENNE WELLS, Colo.—State health officials say a rabid cat and raccoon were found in Cheyenne County last week, and 11 rabid skunks have been found in eastern Colorado this year.

The state health department said Tuesday the discoveries were anticipated after reports of rabid skunks and a coyote last year.

The rabid raccoon was the first in the state since 1963 and the rabid cat was the first since 1985. Health officials say they assume both were infected by a skunk.

Cheyenne County is about 100 miles southwest of Denver on the Kansas border.

Skunk rabies has been reported this year in Arapahoe, Baca, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Kit Carson and Yuma counties. There have been no reports in cities along the populous Front Range.
