Right fish. Wrong day.

That’s the good news, bad news aspect of the 13.8-pound walleye that Westminster resident Robbie Effinger landed July 11 at a Colorado Walleye Association tournament at Trinidad Reservoir.

Trouble was, the catch came during the Friday pre-fishing, not the official tournament next day.

“It would have won the tournament by itself,” Effinger said. “But I’ll take a fish like that anytime — today, tomorrow, next year.”

Fishing with partner Randy Allenbaugh, Effinger caught the big female on a No. 5 perch Wally Diver.

“It wasn’t even 30 inches long,” he said. “It looked like a NFL football.”

The team of Chad Kieffer and Chad Vollmar won the event with a 10-fish total of 13.47 pounds.
