DURANGO, Colo.—Documents obtained by a newspaper identified a substance suspected of prompting April’s lockdown of Mercy Regional Medical Center’s emergency room as ZetaFlow, a substance used for hydraulically fracturing gas wells.
The Durango Herald obtained a Materials Safety Data Sheet from La Plata County Manager Shawn Nau’s office, the paper reported Sunday.
The hospital’s emergency room was locked down and firefighters ventilated the area in April after a gas field worker sought treatment there after being drenched in a liquid. A nurse, Cathy Behr, fell gravely ill after treating the worker and has since recovered.
Houston-based Weatherford Fracturing Technologies that the document said supplied the substance, did not return a message left Sunday at the company’s Denver office by The Associated Press.
State law does not require companies to identify the chemicals used in oil and gas production.
