Commerce City police searched the banks of the Burlington Canal on Monday to recover human remains spotted by an angler Sunday.

The fisherman flagged down officers to report finding a skeletal leg near the canal in the 5800 block of York Street, police said in a news release. When investigators arrived, they found more remains on the bank northwest of the canal.

Police confirmed Monday that the remains were human; they don’t know whether the death was an accident, natural or a homicide.

Parts of the canal were drained to help searchers, and farmers from the Franklin Street bridge to about 120th Avenue — as well as some Thornton residents — were affected, police said. Water was to be back on later Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Commerce City Police Department at 303-227-8840.
