When I was a kid, I used to go to the movies in the summer just to cool down. Forget the films; I wanted the air conditioning.
That may be the reason Starz FilmCenter will be packed during the Democratic National Convention. The cineplex (and home of Denver Film Society) sits across the street from the Pepsi Center, where all the action will come down in the days before Barack Obama’s Aug. 28 speech @ Invesco.
Starz CEO Robert Clasen announced Tuesday that he’ll open the complex as The Starz Green Room — offering up peace and quiet, cool climes, movies, speakers and popcorn.
The DFS will showcase some docs in its Cinemocracy series.
SeaChange Communications plans to present films, stars, musical performances and book signings.
Impact Film Fest will screen socially themed docs and dramatic films along with panel discussions with filmmakers, entertainers and lawmakers.
Speakers and panelists include blogger Ariana Huffington, Product (Red’s) Bobby Shriver, Clinton White House Chief of Staff John Podesta and Save Darfur president Jerry Fowler.
Movies on the screening roster include “Henry Poole Is Here” (the new Luke Wilson/Cheryl Hines comedy), “I.O.U.S.A.” ( a look at the growing national debt), “Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story” (a doc about the edgy late Republican strategist), “Battle in Seattle” (a feature about the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle starring Charlize Theron and Woody Harrelson), “Dave,” “Being There,” “The Candidate” and “Medium Cool.”
Talking trash
Aspen real estate guy Boone Schweitzer has been playing trash for 15 years — and he’ll play it again Friday at the Snowmass Club.
This year marks the 16th outing of The Trashmasters, an off-the-wall golf tourney that raises money for scholarships for kids from the Roaring Fork Valley. So far, Trash has handed out more than $1 million.
This is a tourney that rewards players for terrible shots — if they are able to recover. Trash shots include the Jerrie (in honor of late President Ford for hitting people and other objects) and the Billie (in honor of Bill Clinton for “a lie so bad that it could endanger a player’s reputation and/or gameplan”).
Many celebs have played the game — this year it’s Robert Wagner.
Go to if you want to play some trash.
Whoa, Nellie!
No, horse rustlers did not steal the 6-foot pony that stands on the 21-foot red chair sculpture in front of the Denver Public Library. And it’s not missing because of the expected DNC demonstrations in adjacent Civic Center (what if someone tried to ride it?!). Library spokeswoman Celeste Jackson says it’s just getting a face-lift paint job — and will be back in place soon.
