DENVER—Trying to dispel rumors that it has acquired a “pain ray” gun or weapons that could fire goo or slime at protesters during the Democratic National Convention, the city has released some details of how it has spent part of a $50 million grant for security at the event.

Answering specific questions as part of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado, the city said Tuesday it had not acquired those weapons. Left unanswered were questions about whether the city has acquired guns that fire pepper balls, additional pepper spray, tear gas, stun shield, or stun prods for use on demonstrators.

The city released general information about how it has spent $18 million of the federal grant for security.
