Last week’s picture is the Argentine headframe in Rico. Bob and Elizabeth “Betty” Pellet consolidated the mining companies in the 1930s with the Rico Argentine Mining Co. Betty Pellet is credited with keeping the mining company, and the town, alive for several decades as well as saving the Rio Grande Southern Railroad from closure at the start of World War II. Betty Pellet served in the state legislature from 1941 to 1964 and gained a reputation as a tenacious lawmaker who passed many women’s rights bills in Colorado.
