Dig out your raincoat. Scattered showers and thunderstorms could pound the metro area with heavy rainfall this afternoon, the National Weather Service says. With the chance of precipitation at 40 percent, residents can expect a cooler and wetter day, with a high near 91 degrees.

Tonight, keep that slicker handy, as the chance of rain holds at 40 percent and continues until midnight. Light winds from the southeast will blow through mostly cloudy skies between 7 and 9 mph, according to the Weather Service.

The weekend forecast is mixed. The chance of rain will hover at 30 percent Saturday, with most of the rain expected between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Skies will be partly cloudy, with a daytime high near 93 degrees and an overnight low near 66. Winds will remain calm as they shift to the southwest.

By Sunday, you can leave your rain gear home. The Weather Service predicts bright, mostly sunny skies with a high near 95 degrees. A few clouds will roll in Sunday night, as the low drops to around 64 degrees.

Temperatures will hang in the low 90s through most of next week, with cloudy skies forecast between Monday and Thursday. The chance of rain will be slight, and overnight lows will be in mid 60s, the Weather Service says.
