COLORADO SPRINGS — While addressing a booster club meeting Friday, Air Force coach Troy Calhoun resurrected talk of the Falcons resuming a football series with the University of Colorado.
“If you had a game every other year or every third or fourth year, you could have a governor’s cup,” Calhoun said. “We already play CSU, and CSU already plays CU. Right now, it’s not on the horizon, but there has to be a way to get that meshed together.”
Scheduling would be the biggest problem. Air Force has only two open dates every season, and Calhoun and the administration want a home game against a lesser opponent to open the season.
To that end, the Falcons’ home opener in 2012 against Minnesota in the back end of a home-and-home series has been canceled. Plus, CU usually plays Colorado State in its first game. That leaves a potential game against CU for the Falcons’ second open date.
Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh said he has not talked to CU athletic director Mike Bohn for at least six months about a possible football series.
“For the foreseeable future, it just doesn’t fit our schedules,” Mueh said.
