What’s this? Gambling talk at Dove Valley?

Well, yeah. When Jay Cutler and Tony Scheffler start punking each other, the conversation can lead just about anywhere.

As Scheffler walked past him Friday, a heavy ice wrap over his right arm, Cutler couldn’t help himself.

“Tony Scheffler made it through practice today!” yelled Cutler.

Even Scheffler estimated the odds of that happening at “250 on the money line. A lot of guys bet against me, but I made it through.”

“I bet the house against him,” Cutler said.

All chops-busting aside, Scheffler’s health is no laughing matter to the Broncos. They’re a different team when he’s on the field than when he’s nursing his latest injury.

Case in point: Scheffler didn’t catch a ball in the first month of last season, when he was struggling to come back from a broken left foot. He then proceeded to catch 47 passes for five touchdowns in the final 11 games, making him one of the NFL’s most productive tight ends.

So what happened next? He watched most of the offseason workouts after breaking the same foot again. He’s good to go so far, and the Broncos have to hope he stays that way. If they’re going to close the gap on the Chargers in the AFC West, they need Scheffler on the field.
