DENVER—Two former prosecutors will look into whether El Paso County District John Newsome misspent taxpayer money on a trip to a Notre Dame football game.
Gov. Bill Ritter appointed state Attorney General John Suthers to be the special prosecutor in the case on Monday. But because Newsome used to work for Suthers when he was El Paso County’s district attorney, Suthers appointed two former district attorneys to oversee the case—former 8th Judicial District Attorney Stuart A. VanMeveren and former 19th District Attorney Al Dominguez.
At issue is a side trip Newsome made to his alma mater last fall after traveling to Chicago to question a witness to a Colorado Springs murder.
According to Ritter’s office, Newsome’s office initially reimbursed him for the approximately $700 he spent on the trip but he paid the money back after being questioned by a reporter.
Colorado Springs police referred the case to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation last week.
