MINNEAPOLIS — Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was suspended for one game Saturday for his outburst Thursday night that led fans to throw hats and baseballs on the field during a victory over the White Sox.
Gardenhire missed Saturday night’s home game against the Indians. Bob Watson, MLB’s vice president of on-field operations, said Gardenhire also was fined.

• The Royals designated right-hander Yasuhiko Yabuta for assignment, placed second baseman Mark Grudzielanek on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right ankle, and recalled infielder Jason Smith from Triple-A Omaha.
• The Cardinals released right-hander Matt Clement, who has struggled to return from shoulder surgery in 2006. They also said outfielder Chris Duncan would undergo surgery Monday to repair a ruptured disc in his neck.

• The Mariners purchased the contract of left-hander Jake Woods from Triple-A Tacoma.
• Braves ace Tim Hudson will undergo season-ending elbow ligament replacement surgery this week.
