Two people died this morning after a Mercedes-Benz going the wrong way on South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton crashed into two other cars near the intersection at West Belleview Avenue.
Littleton police said the accident, which occurred about 7:45 a.m., happened after the black Mercedes went north in the southbound lanes of traffic.
The Mercedes struck a Honda sedan head-on, went airborne and then struck a southbound Ford sedan.
The male driver of the Mercedes, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene. The female driver of the Ford, 27, also died at the scene.
The 26-year-old driver of the Honda was transported to Swedish Medical Center with serious injuries. Authorities anticipate that she will survive.
Littleton police declined to release the identities of those involved in the accident pending notification of their families.
The accident occurred in the 5200 block of South Santa Fe Drive, a few hundred feet north of the intersection with South Prince Street, where police think the Mercedes turned onto Santa Fe.
An investigation is ongoing, and police said they did not know why the Mercedes driver entered the southbound lanes in an area where north and southbound are divided by a raised median.
At 1:30 p.m. the northbound lanes of Santa Fe were open, but the southbound lanes remained closed while the investigation continued.
