An elderly Denver man was killed Saturday while attempting to remove a wind-damaged tree that broke free and crushed him.

The man’s identity has not been released but police said the accident occurred at 1085 S. Grove St., in southwest Denver.

The man’s tree was one of several that fell after a sudden microburst of wind hit the neighborhood near West Evans Avenue and South Lowell Boulevard.

Another home was severely damaged in the 2000 block of south Lowell and one was damaged in the 1800 block of South Julian Street.

Xcel Energy reported about 500 customers lost electricity for the evening until crews could repair the downed power lines.

Microbursts are caused when thunderstorm rain evaporates before reaching the ground.
