When the leaders took to the 18th green Sunday, the stands were full and fans were stacked 12 deep, as well as around the pond that fronts the green.
The 128,706 fans who came through the gates this week at The Broadmoor were treated to an eventful U.S. Senior Open. It also had many of the golfers wanting a return visit. After more than 26,000 fans came out Saturday, there were 29,661 for Sunday’s final round.
Without a major tour event since The International left the PGA Tour after 2006, fans in the state seem starved for championship golf.
“It felt like a regular (PGA) Tour event, a major in another regular tour event,” Fred Funk said. “I hope they get (The Broadmoor) in the rotation a little sooner than I hear they’re going to get it in.”
Next up for the East Course is the 2011 Women’s Open, which was played here in 1995.
