DENVER—Fidelity National announced Tuesday that it has purchased the Colorado operations of Mercury Cos. Inc., a Denver-based firm that owns title companies.

Under the deal, Fidelity National is taking over Security Title, First American Heritage Title, Title America and United Title. In a written announcement, Fidelity said the companies accounted for about 30 percent of Colorado’s title insurance market in 2007.

Last week, Mercury Cos. announced it was shutting down its operations in Arizona, Texas and California and was in negotiations to sell its Colorado operations to First American Title, nation’s second largest title company.

Mercury spokeswoman Kate Miller confirmed there were talks with First American but Fidelity National later emerged as the buyer.

Mercury still has operations in Oregon.

Fidelity National of Jacksonville, Fla. said its title insurance underwriters issue about 27 percent of all title insurance policies in the United States. It also provides flood and home warranty insurance.
