The Rockies’ need for a proven starter led to a bold move Tuesday. Rather than wait for Livan Hernandez to become a free agent, the Rockies claimed the veteran right-hander on trade waivers, according to a major-league source.

It is a bit surprising because by claiming him from the Minnesota Twins, the Rockies could get stuck with the roughly $1.6 million remaining on his contract. The next step is for the Twins and Rockies to work out a trade by Thursday. Minnesota designated Hernandez for assignment last week, giving the team 10 days to release him, trade him or send him to the minor leagues. The Twins have the right to pull Hernandez back once a team claims him.

Colorado is seeking an upgrade over hot-and-cold lefty Jorge De La Rosa, who started Tuesday night’s game.

Hernandez went 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA in 139 2/3 innings before being designated for assignment Friday to make room for Francisco Liriano. Hernandez has struggled lately (4-7, 6.64 ERA in his last 14 starts), but Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba believes Hernandez could help stabilize Colorado’s rotation.

“First of all, he’s got experience, and he knows how to pitch against teams in our division,” Torrealba said. “Plus, he can throw a lot of innings and give us a chance to win. I think it would be a good move if we get him.”
