NEW YORK — Mets closer Billy Wagner, who has blown 7-of-34 save chances, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left forearm.

Struggling setup man Aaron Heilman is likely to get the first shot at closing in Wagner’s absence.

“I’ve closed a few games before, so that definitely helps. Did it a little bit in college. I don’t feel like I’m going out there naked,” Heilman said before allowing three runs in one-third of an inning during Tuesday night’s 6-5 victory over the Padres.

The Mets also recalled right-hander Ruddy Lugo from Triple-A New Orleans.

Footnotes.

Kansas City catcher Miguel Olivo and pitcher Zack Greinke have been suspended five games each for causing trouble in a weekend game with the White Sox. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended two games and Royals manager Trey Hillman was given one game. All four penalties also included undisclosed fines.

• Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was placed on the 15-day DL with a broken left foot.

• Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright (right middle finger) threw 35 pitches in a simulated game and will begin what he hopes is a short rehab stint this week.

• Cubs closer Kerry Wood was activated after being sidelined for three weeks because of a blister on his right index finger. The Cubs designated left- hander Scott Eyre for assignment less than two months after his club-record streak of 33 consecutive scoreless appearances ended.
