BOULDER, Colo.—A Boulder man has been deported from China and sent back to the United States after climbing up lamp poles outside the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest.

Thirty-four-year-old Phill Bartell was among a group of pro-Tibet activists called Students for a Free Tibet. The four were detained Wednesday after putting up the 140-square-foot banners with slogans like “Tibet Will Be Free”.

Bartell, a tattoo artist, arrived in San Francisco Thursday. He said he was questioned by Chinese authorities for about 10 hours and then forced to buy his own one-way ticket back to the U.S.

He says he prepared for the protest by scaling trees and poles in Colorado.
