Bio: Keary Colbert

Wide receiver Keary Colbert may have only been a Bronco for a few months, but he’s embracing his role as a veteran, even if relaying tales of seasons past sometimes makes him feel older than his 26 years.

“Ultimately that’s what this game is about, what life is about — passing down stuff, knowledge, experience, wisdom,” Colbert said.

Colbert, who signed as a free agent in March after spending four years with Carolina, is fighting for playing time with guys like veteran Darrell Jackson and rookie Eddie Royal.

And while Colbert certainly views Royal as competition, Colbert — who, like Royal, was a second-round draft pick — said he’s trying to be a mentor to the rookie, too.

Colbert started all 15 games his rookie year in 2004 for the Panthers and set franchise rookie records for receptions (47), receiving yards (754) and receiving touchdowns (5).

“I’ve been letting him know my situations in the past, as far as my rookie year and my opportunity and his opportunity,” Colbert said of Royal, who will be a starter in the preseason opener at Houston on Saturday. “There really are a lot of similarities.”

As for Colbert he said he is still trying to get adjusted to the Broncos’ system and is hoping to improve by the time the regular season starts. “Football s all about making plays, and I need to, and want to, take advantage of my opportunities to do that. I haven’t done it like I would have liked, or up to my potential,” Colbert said. “But that’s the good thing about camp, you usually have time to work yourself out of the funk.”

“As long as I don’t punt, it won’t be like high school,” said rookie Spencer Larsen, who is expected to play both fullback and linebacker in Saturday’s preseason game at Houston. Larsen played offense, defense and special teams at Gilbert High in Gilbert, Az.
